Being on a team is more rewarding and yields more success than going it alone.
Local nonprofits form a network that helps Alaskans overcome obstacles and thrive. When you pitch in, the evolving needs of children, families, and communities are met. United Way of Anchorage’s supporters have positioned us to gather experts and advocates who address harsh realities by creating community solutions.
In our communities, teamwork is prioritized as the Alaskan way.
Collaboration is imperative in our state. United Way limits groupthink by listening to new voices, finds inspiration in cutting-edge approaches, and makes room at the table for more people. Our teams have wide-ranging experience and represent many groups, enabling us to identify issues, set goals, and achieve them.

Capacity Building
As needs arise and change, nonprofits stand ready to assist. Sometimes, they grow to meet demand. United Way serves as a grant maker that supports nonprofits when they set out to serve more Alaskans, do more to help, and make a greater impact in people’s lives. We invest in efforts that fill gaps and reach further.
Knowledge Transfers
A strong nonprofit infrastructure results in strong nonprofits, and it's built with best practices and sound information. In 1983, United Way began offering training to boards of directors. Since then, we’ve been a leader in knowledge transfer. Eventually, our offerings expanded and morphed into what is now The Foraker Group.
Leveraged Strength
Think of one nonprofit as a skein of yarn. When lots of skeins are woven together, a blanket becomes larger, warmer, and more durable. Now, think of United Way as a knitter. We use a design that intertwines local nonprofits and their services. Our community ends up with a better product to cover and protect more people.
Community Models
Success is measured by community-wide wellbeing. Nonprofits can often advance causes and respond more quickly and efficiently than government agencies. United Way designs and tests approaches and programs that help stronger systems emerge to better support Alaskans’ needs.
Pooled Resources
When government agencies, private funders, for-profit organizations, and community members combine resources to support nonprofits, services can expand and accomplish more. United Way often helps lead those efforts. Then, more Alaskans can receive comprehensive assistance as nonprofits coordinate care.
Shared Outcomes
Extremes, like weather and geography, influence Alaskans’ commitment to coordination. United Way knows that shared outcomes and hard work done together create the best solutions and make it more likely that we all succeed.
