An Alaskan considers options for supporting United Way.

When you make plans to give generously, we thank you now.

A planned gift is a unique, personal opportunity to have a lasting impact in Alaska. By coordinating with United Way of Anchorage and your tax advisor, the return on your investment into our work goes toward impact areas that matter to you. We offer many planned giving options, which are detailed below. Explore the possibilities and determine what aligns with your values and charitable goals. Then, please contact us about next steps.

Your legacy can support our community beyond now and into the years to come.

When you set up planned giving with United Way, you help strengthen families and build a more equitable community where younger generations can thrive. You also become an example to your friends, family, and posterity. It may inspire them to make a lasting impact too, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Immediate Impact

If you choose to donate to United Way in one of the following ways, our community and Alaskans can begin benefiting from your gift today. You’ll get to see how the return on your investments from your earnings transform into a return on your investment in our community.

Appreciated Stock Gifts

Donating appreciated stock allows you to support a nonprofit while making a larger gift than if you sold the stock first. If you’ve owned it for more than a year and give it directly to United Way, you can avoid paying capital gains tax, receive a tax deduction, and preserve more funds to support United Way. Plus, these gifts can occur at any time.

Donor Advised Funds

Do you have a donor advised fund (DAF) at Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or BNY Mellon? You can use DAF Direct to recommend grants to United Way from your existing fund. You can start this option today. DAFs provide you with opportunities to align your charitable goals with the future that you want to help create in Alaska.

IRA Charitable Rollovers

Also called a “qualified charitable distribution,” these rollovers allow you to withdraw some funds every year after you reach the age of 70½ or older and pass them to qualified charities, such as United Way. Please consult your financial advisor to determine the required minimum distributions and tax implications associated with this gift.

Charitable Gift Annuity

With this type of giving, you make a direct payment to a nonprofit, like United Way, which allows us to invest your funds and guarantees that you receive a tax deduction and avoid capital gains tax. Under the contract, we then pay you a fixed income for life and it extends beyond your lifetime. Any remaining funds are committed to United Way.

Legacy Gifts

You can make plans now to support United Way beyond your lifetime. The following options distribute your gifts after the settlement of your estate. Legacy gifts can include appreciated stocks, DAFs, and IRA charitable rollovers, which are defined above.

Bequests

A bequest is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an attorney, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift for family, friends, or United Way or make a bequest using a beneficiary designation form.

Charitable Lead Trusts

Charitable lead trusts allow you to place assets into a trust during a specified timeframe. Afterward, the trust assets are distributed to beneficiaries. You can name United Way as a beneficiary of your charitable lead trust.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Charitable remainder trusts specifically provide income for a set period to named beneficiaries, such as heirs. After the terms of its payout end, United Way receives the remainder, a fixed amount, or a percentage of your trust’s value.

Life Insurance Policies

If you have a life insurance policy that has outlasted its original purpose, consider gifting it to United Way. For example, you may have purchased a policy for minor children who are now financially independent adults.

Retirement Plan Beneficiaries

You can designate the remaining balance of your 401(k), 403(b), IRA, Keogh, or other retirement plan or a percentage of its balance to United Way. Your entire gift is exempt from taxes and strengthens our community.

Your planned gift enables your values and generosity to continue creating opportunities long into Alaska’s future.
