Volunteers from GCI help serve lunch at the Senior Center in Anchorage on our 2026 Day of Caring.

We help make volunteer connections.

Since 1956, United Way of Anchorage has offered unparalleled backing for nonprofits’ initiatives, programs, resources, and services for children, adults, and households right here in Anchorage and throughout Alaska. Volunteers expand the work these organizations do every day to help people find stability, build healthier lives, and have new opportunities.

Let us help you coordinate community needs--both time-sensitive projects and recurring events.

Powerful Reminder

When you show up to volunteer, you change. You’re introduced to people, nonprofits, and programs that you might never have met. You better understand people’s and neighborhoods’ needs and strengths. Remember: Building a stronger Anchorage is a shared responsibility. We know that you’re here because you care.

Your time matters.

You can’t solve every problem. Give an hour. An afternoon. A skill. A Saturday. A recurring commitment.  Let us connect you to opportunities.

Alaskans show up.

As Anchorage has grown, so have the ways community members contribute. United Way began prioritizing volunteering efforts in 1984. Ten years later, our first Day of Caring brought 1,254 volunteers from 22 workplaces to 114 projects in Anchorage. By 1999, about 2,000 volunteers from 84 workplaces completed more than 350 projects. In 2026, we had 87 volunteers who helped at nine nonprofits, completing 2,218.50 volunteer hours, which equals donated time worth about $85,124. From serving meals, creating infant kits, and doing yardwork, Alaskans showed they care.

Spending time volunteering is a real gift!

Pick somewhere. Give time. Then, do more.

Your time and energy are valuable. Make them count.

To make a difference, you don’t need a company team with hours to spare, a group with years of experience, or friends who have lots of free time. You just need somewhere to begin. That’s where United Way comes in. We connect you with volunteer opportunities across our community via BeTheChange907.org so that you can find work that matters to you—and organizations that can put your time, interests, and abilities to good use.

Many Causes & Shifts

There is no single way to be a volunteer. Maybe you have one free afternoon or are looking for something you can do every month. You might want to work outside, meet people, use professional skills, help behind the scenes, or learn more about issues.

What do you care about?

Think about the people, causes, and issues that matter most to you. Then, start there.

What can you give?

Your time matters—but so do your experience, skills, interests, and willingness to learn.

What fits your life?

Look for one-time, seasonal, or ongoing opportunities that work with your availability.

Personal Preferences

You already make a difference in people’s lives. Have you considered how you can have a greater impact by volunteering? Your time helps nonprofits and organizations accomplish work that might take a backseat due to limited staff time and resources.

Grow understanding.

Volunteering introduces you to people, organizations, challenges, and strengths.

Meet people.

Shared projects have a remarkable way of turning strangers into teammates.

Build new skills.

Volunteering exposes you to new fields and gives you firsthand experience.

Find belonging.

One shift can become a tradition—or the beginning of a long relationship with a cause.

Nonprofits, your mission needs people behind it. BeTheChange907 connects you to them.

Nonprofits know what needs to be done in our community, but finding enough people to do it can be another matter. United Way puts local organizations in touch with people and workplace teams ready to give their time and energy. If your nonprofit has an upcoming project, special event, or ongoing need that could benefit from volunteers, BeTheChange907.org helps you turn that need into an opportunity to act on.

Time-Tested Insights

Good volunteer experiences don’t happen simply because people show up. The strongest projects have clear purposes, realistic expectations, and work that makes volunteers feel their time mattered. We help you think through planning questions.

What do you need to accomplish?
How many volunteers can you use?
How long will your project take?
How many shifts should be filled?
What skills are required?
What materials are needed?
Who will supervise volunteers?
Does it connect to your mission?
Will it create relationships?

New Prospects

For nonprofits operating with limited staff and resources, volunteer support can create capacity that simply doesn’t otherwise exist. No matter your size or number of clients, United Way can promote opportunities that bring new people to your doors.
